1.Sort your layout

First thing that you have to get is a proper layout of how you want your workplace to be. Your screen or monitor must be at your eye-level for your convenience. The main reason for this simply comes down to bad planning and a failure to envisage how your workplace is actually going to be on a day-to-day basis — practicality must always take priority over aesthetics.

Put frequently used items, like your phone or other supplies, on your dominant side of the cabin so that you can avoid reaching out multiple times to get it. Plan accordingly as to how you want your workplace to look because you will be attending that space every day, might as well plan it in a way that can give you a sense of motivation to start your day.

2. Consider your supplies, get them right.

Considering or minding your supplies are powerful and simple to do routines that you can add immediately to your repertoire. When it comes to proper organization of your cabin, moderation is the key. Things or items that are used on a daily basis should be on top of your desk and things that are used once in a week or rarely used should go in the drawer, under or on the side of the cabin.

Getting up even once in a day just to get a pencil or a paperclip is shutting your brain off a project and you will have to re-centre your focus all over again. So, try avoiding that as much as possible. Try keeping the desk clean and spotless by getting rid of unwanted things which you haven’t used or will not be using again. It’s best to group all the similar items together and not keep it in multiple places.

3. Don’t overdo your personal knick- knacks

Maintaining a work-life balance is hard, especially on your desk. Family pictures, vacation souvenirs and other trinkets can provide positive feelings during the work day, but too many mementos can be a distraction. Our eyes pull every single thing in front of us and our brain processes it even if we don’t realize it.

A desk full of materialistic things means a lot of work and editing for you. Avoid keeping too many of your personal items in your workplace, it would help you think straight at work and focus on what needs to be done. Focusing on work needs a lot of self-discipline, so don’t overdo it.

Your work is controlled by what you focus on, get rid of knick-knacks that would come your way.

4. Prioritize Work

Only keep relevant and active projects and documents on your desk. Prioritize the things you need occasionally, so you will have to face the difficulties coming your way when you need something. When work gets backed up, it’s easy to get overwhelmed and stall productivity, so here’s how you group projects to prioritize:

1) Important and urgent
2) Urgent, but not necessarily important
3) Important, without urgency
4) Non-urgent, and not important

Adding vertical file holders help avoid stacking folders on top of each other and overlooking the ones not on top.

5. Prioritize your labelling in the correct order:

Labelling your work helps you work expeditiously. It need not be too fancy or flashy, just name it right and allocate in the right areas. Choose a label maker that’s simple to use and verifiable. Take the time to label shelves, drawers etc. Not only will it remind you where things go, but it would also help other individuals who may have a need to find, use, or put away anything in your workspace. Settling things while using labelling just makes it hassle-free.
